Changes are coming December 29 for smoke alarms in federally-assisted housing units. Make sure you have installed the proper equipment for the health and safety of your residents.

The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 (CAA) mandates additional smoke alarm requirements effective December 29, 2024.

Smoke detectors in federally-assisted housing units must meet these characteristics:

  • Hardwired or
  • 10-year non-rechargeable, sealed, tamper-resistant, battery-powered

OHFA field agents and compliance staff members will begin inspecting for this requirement, December 29.
